It Is Based on Needs, Not the Diagnosis
There is no automatic EHCP for autism. An EHCP is for a child whose special educational needs cannot be met by the support a school or setting normally provides (SEN support).
Many autistic children have an EHCP, and many are supported well through SEN support without one. What decides it is the level of the child's needs — not the diagnosis. A diagnosis is not required to request an assessment. See what an EHCP is and how to get one.
Autism-Related Needs an Assessment Looks At
An EHC needs assessment gathers advice on a child's education, health and care needs. For an autistic child, these often include:
- → Communication and interaction needs.
- → Sensory needs and the support to manage them.
- → Support with transitions, routines and unstructured times.
- → Social understanding and emotional regulation.
- → Anxiety, including anxiety about attending school.
Masking — When School Doesn't See It
Some autistic children mask: they hold their difficulties in at school and show them at home. A school may describe a child as coping while the family sees distress, meltdowns or school avoidance. Evidence from home, alongside any professional reports, helps describe the full picture of a child's needs — not just what is visible in the classroom.
Checking the Plan Reflects the Needs
If a plan is issued, the special educational provision sits in Section F and must be specific and quantified. These guides explain what to look for: Section F specificity, spotting vague wording, and EHCP for ADHD.
Common Questions
Can you get an EHCP for autism?
No condition automatically leads to an EHCP. An EHCP is based on whether a child’s special educational needs can be met by the support a school normally provides. Many autistic children have an EHCP because their needs are greater than that — but it is the needs, not the autism diagnosis, that the local authority assesses.
Does an autism diagnosis mean my child gets an EHCP?
No. A diagnosis on its own does not lead to an EHCP. The local authority looks at the child’s special educational needs and whether SEN support is enough to meet them. A diagnosis can be helpful evidence, but the decision is based on needs.
Can you get an EHCP for autism without a diagnosis?
Yes. An EHC needs assessment is based on a child’s needs, not on a diagnosis. A diagnosis is not required to request an assessment, though any reports describing your child’s needs are useful evidence.
What if my autistic child masks at school?
Some autistic children mask — holding difficulties in at school and showing them at home. School staff may report that a child is "coping," while the family sees a very different picture. Evidence from home, and from any professionals involved, helps describe the full extent of a child’s needs.
Can you get an EHCP for autism and ADHD together?
An EHCP describes the child, not a single condition. If a child has both autism and ADHD, the assessment considers all of their special educational needs together. It is the overall picture of need that matters.
